Medication-Assisted Treatment

Medication-Assisted Treatment

No matter the substance or activity, no two individuals struggling with addictions have the exact same story. Similarly, addiction treatment is not a one-size-fits-all journey, and individuals may need a combination of treatment styles to successfully battle their addiction. At Central Kentucky Addiction Center, addiction specialist Dr. Alicia practices a two-pronged approach to addiction treatment involving counseling and medication-assisted treatment. Medication-assisted treatment is noted as the gold standard of addiction treatment and can make all the difference in helping Kentuckians overcome their addictions.

What is Medication-Assisted Treatment?

One of the two prongs of Dr. Alicia’s addiction treatment is medication-assisted treatment. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is an advanced way to treat addictions that includes integrating certain FDA-approved medications into an addict’s treatment plan to help with substance cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Medications used in medication-assisted treatment do not serve as a new addiction. On the contrary, these medications are a tool a person with an addiction can use to help heal their brain and reframe their mindset without facing the dangerous and distracting symptoms that can come from withdrawal.

There are different types of medications that can be used in medication-assisted treatment. Some medications, such as Methadone or Buprenorphine, help to decrease withdrawal symptoms by acting on the same targets in the brain as other opioids without the effect of a high. These medicines can be taken for months or even years to help someone overcome an addiction. Another medication that can be used to battle addiction is one called Naltrexone. Naltrexone works by removing the high that someone would feel from taking opioids. This can be taken to prevent a relapse.

Benefits of Medication-Assisted Treatment

While our goal at Central Kentucky Addiction Treatment is always to help our patients fully recover, we understand that it can be a long journey. There are many benefits to medication-assisted therapy that can help patients stay safe, healthy, and on their road to recovery. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration,

Medication-assisted treatment has proven to be clinically effective at reducing the number of patients that need to be admitted to the hospital for detoxification after the use of opioids or other substances.

Medication-assisted treatment has been proven to not only improve patient survival rates but also to improve retention in treatment programs. When individuals feel as though their treatment is helping, they are more likely to stay invested.

Patients taking part in medication-assisted treatment are more often able to gain and maintain employment, making it easier for them to live lives providing for themselves.

Medication-assisted treatment has been proven to improve birth rates among pregnant women who are suffering from addiction or other substance abuse disorders.

Individuals with substance abuse disorders who participate in medication-assisted treatment are less likely to abuse illegal opioids or participate in other criminal activity.

Beyond Medication-Assisted Treatment

In addition to medication-assisted treatment, the other prong to Central Kentucky Addiction Treatment method involves monthly counseling sessions with Dr. Alicia to set them up for success throughout the month. Counseling for any type of addiction serves to aid patients by allowing them the opportunity to reframe their attitudes and behaviors related to drug or substance use, create new and healthy patterns, and stay consistent with other forms of treatment, such as medication-assisted treatment. Patients at Central Kentucky Addiction Treatment only receive individual counseling, meaning they will have individualized and one-on-one care to set goals, discuss obstacles and setbacks, and celebrate any progress made toward recovery.
